For much of the modern period, Christianity has been dominated by words. In clown ministry, the power of other forms of communication is being rediscovered afresh for a new generation.

Clowning is not a new thing in the tradition of Christian spirituality. It goes right back into the earliest centuries of Christian history. The New Testament itself speaks of how God can use foolishness to challenge the wise and powerful, and there have been many examples of that over the centuries.

The 4th century clown Philemon had such a compelling way of presenting the challenge of his faith that he was persecuted and, ultimately, put to death on the orders of the Roman emperor Diocletian.

As a native-born Celt, Valentine has always been attuned to the relationship between the arts and spirituality. The dawn of the new millennium has witnessed an increase of those in search of spiritual meaning in life who are becoming more aware of the importance of non-verbal communications. At a time when fewer people are attracted to organized religion, and when many have no time for the church's traditional attitudes, the creative arts offer a unique resource for the renewal of both worship and evangelisation.
